This Blog’s Deal: I Won’t Annoy You, So Please Sign Up Without Being Bugged

RSS subscription Cheapest Destinations

A survey of travelers came out recently showing that the thing blog readers get most annoyed by, with 72% putting this at the top, was pop-up ads asking them to sign up for something.

I’m one very active blog reader who would be in that group. I frequently hit the back button or close the tab if one of those covers up what I’m trying to read. So I have only subjected you readers to one once—as a one-week test to confirm my suspicions that I wasn’t the only person who felt that way.

Here’s the problem though: the people who put those pop-ups into the code have a very valid, data-driven reason for doing so: they get more sign-ups that way. My argument has always been that if you only measure the sign-ups and not who leaves it’s the same as measuring telemarketing conversions without measuring harm to the brand. But that falls on deaf ears when those bloggers point to their subscriber numbers and are experiencing success.

Let’s come to an agreement…

So here’s the deal. I’m not going to annoy you with a pop-up “call to action.” I’m not going to plead with you every post to like this page or that on Facebook, to follow me on Twitter, or share every post with everyone you know.

I really would like it though if you’d snag the RSS feed or get the e-mail version (twice a week) in return. You’ll get good advice based on 20 years of travel, without overdone self-promotion and more in-your-face ads. For e-mail, you can also just enter your address here or top right of this blog.

If you subscribed by RSS more than two months ago and get your feed from Google Feedburner, you probably need to do it again as I switched to Feedblitz. (Google is shutting down services like mad and Feedburner’s days are probably numbered.)

Done! I hate those things. I have a pop-up blocker but it doesn't work all the time.

Thank you! Those pop-up subscription boxes are a plague. Whoever uses them should have every site they try to look at blocked by one. Every day.
