Rental Car Companies Wake Up and Smell the Hybrid

hybrid carsAs some welcome “do the right thing” news, U.S. car hire firms Avis and Enterprise announced new plans last week to add more hybrid cars to their lots. Avis is adding 500 Nissan Altima hybrids and Enterprise is adding 1,500 Toyota Priuses in the fall. So instead of just offering the boring clunker cars with bad gas mileage that are cast-offs from Detroit, you can opt for a car that’s better for the environment. (Something tells me those rental desk clerks will still keep asking me, “Would you like to upgrade to a SUV for free?”)

Hertz isn’t taking this lying down though. They now say they are going to one-up the others, but it will take longer. They are planning to have 3,400 Priuses in stock by next summer.

In all fairness, these companies can’t just snap their fingers and buy a few thousand hybrids. While gas-guzzlers are languishing in storage, the hybrids are getting bought up as fast as they come off the assembly line. You might have to call the specific rental agencies where you’re going to see if they have any available.

That’s fantastic that they are adding more fuel efficient vehicles to their fleets, this will go a long way in helping to reduce our global carbon footprint.

Awesome! I give my two thumbs up to Nissan and Ford to other car manufacturers who are advocating environmental preservation through hybrid cars. Perhaps the government would support this development. Rather than the clunker bill giving incentive to those who would give up their old cars for newer ones, why not giving your gas spender cars with hybrids or even electric cars, if they are available.

Finally! I can actually drive a hybrid car just by renting it. Good news for me. :)

Great move for rental car companies to come up with more hybrid units in their rental car fleet. I wonder how these companies have kept their hybrid car inventories as this post was made almost 4 years ago. Nevertheless, this is a score for the environment. For me, I would prefer renting a hybrid for its economy and boost to the atmosphere.

Great idea for rental cars to support hybrids. I look forward to the day when hybrid cars or battery cars will rule the street.

That exactly what I did to my company. Foregoing the traditional fleet of cars and welcoming the flotilla of new hybrid cars. I’m still amaze how my customer love my new babies! Oh, well, thanks for this article. Very insightful!
